Heather is an experienced workshop leader and has run numerous courses in creative writing for both students and adults. This includes running short scriptwriting courses for women's festivals and conducting poetry workshops to the inmates at HMP Bristol. Her experience includes:

CHILDREN/ TEENS

  • General education/ writing:
    • Poetry & performance: Workshops in conjunction with the touring show Accents on Words through Tall Lighthouse Books. Venues include Alton Convent School (6th Form) and Sussex University.

    • Blackfriars Settlement/ Women's Library (London): Poetry & performance recidency with girls aged 11-15 on the exhibit "What Women Want" at the Women's Library.

    • Puppetry and Poetry for ages 4-7 (London): Workshop conducted through Oxfam (developed poem and puppets through Apples and Snakes education workshops).

    • Reading tutor (Edmonton, Alberta): Big Buddy Reader with Grade 1 students (6 year olds) at McKee Elementary School

    • Maths tutor (Edmonton, Alberta): tutored struggling students (ages 15-17) on basic maths.

    • Historical Interpreter (Fort Edmonton Park - Edmonton, Alberta): Ran the school house for visiting school groups to experience school in 1885 and researched and program planned special events and daily activities.

  • Drama:
    • Clapton Young Performers (Clapton, London): Worked with 2 groups (8-12s and 12-17s) on drama/ writing theatre.

    • McKee Elementary Drama Class (Edmonton, Alberta): Developed and facilitated an after school drama program for children aged 8-10.

    • Mirror Theatre (Alberta tour): Writing and performing touring social theatre shows and facilitating workshops based on the themes of the shows (subjects included bullying, body image and English literature.)

  • Multi-discipline:
    • Head Guider (Edmonton, Alberta): Organized a spark unit for 5-year-olds, which included program planning, music, arts and crafts, drama, science, outdoors and accounting/budgeting as well as being the Music coordinator and Guider-in-Charge for 127th Brownie Pack with similar duties.

    • Community Leader (Community Services - Edmonton, Alberta): Planned and implemented sports, crafts, drama, collective kitchen and teen programs for high needs aged 2-18 in low income areas. Organized and headed committees for special events including year end parties with over 300 participants, planned park sleepovers and field trips as well as working as a mentor and supervisor for teen volunteers ages 13-17.

    • Young Canada Works (Government of Canada, Vancouver, BC): Planned and implemented excursions to cultural and historical landmarks along the southwest coast of Canada in conjunction with theatre workshops.

ADULTS

  • Games/ drama in community programs (Edmonton Parks and Recreation - Edmonton, Alberta): This consisted of teaching and developing manuals for individuals teaching community programs.

  • Writing (various): This includes workshops on developing character, poetry and writing for the stage and screen at festivals and Bristol prison such as:
    • Writing 10 Minute Plays - Spit Lit ‘07
    • Political Poetry & Performance - Runnymede Festival
    • Poetry & Fiction - HMP Bristol Prison, Renassaince One
    • Writing for Stage and Screen - Sable Literary Festival
    • Writing for Stage and Screen - SpitLit ’04 - ‘06
    • Poems for Ken Saro-Wiwa - SpitLit ‘05
    • Developing Character (poetry) - Stark Gallery Writers Group
